Designing A Great Landing Page

on 5/24/2013

As more and more of our clients are seeking to generate business efficiently through their websites, and are using our Portfolio software to do so, effect use of tools like landing pages to convert visitors to customers is absolutely crucial. We've taken a page from the playbook of our marketing partner, Marketworx, and provided you with some good ideas and best practices when configuring landing pages for your website:

1 -  Attention Grabbing Headline 2 - Images or Video
Your headline should, of course, be linked to whatever your landing page is for, but it should also compel the visitor to read on for more information.
You should incorporate images, or preferably, a video that compels the visitor  to learn more, or purchase whatever it is your landing page is promoting. Testimonials, product overviews, or demonstrations are great ways to convert views into sales.
3 -  Clear, Understandable Copy
4 - Call To Action
This is where your headline is going to lead the visitor. They may not take the time to watch your video, so you should include clear, easy to understand copy that compels them to either get more information, or make a purchase. Try not to be too wordy or incorporate a lot of jargon. Bullet points are a great way to draw the reader's eye to important selling points or benefits. A CTA is probably the most important part of your landing page. What does the visitor do when they're ready to make a purchase or obtain more information? CTAs should stand out on the page and help the visitor purchase or request more information quickly, in as few steps as possible.
5 - Use Trust Indicators
6 - More Detail
Trust indicators, like testimonials from existing clients or seals for security or industry credentials, demonstrate credibility. Guarantees or seals from organizations like Better Business Bureaus have been shown to increase conversion by 41-58%.
Some consumers crave details. Product specs, warranty information, and so on. Without incorporating an entire book into your landing page, it doesn't hurt to provide more of the most sought-after information on your product. FAQs are sometimes a good option, as long as they're concise.
7 - Keep It Above The Fold
Keep the most important information, and especially CTAs, on the portion of the page that does not require scrolling. This may require testing under a few different resolutions. You website stats, such as those obtained through Google Analytics, can tell you what the most common devices, browsers and viewing resolutions are for your site.

TESTING 1, 2, 3...

Even with a solid guide like the one above, it is still important to constantly test the effectiveness of your landing page. Run as many A/B tests as possible to determine which combinations of text, images, video, and, layout generate the highest numbers of conversions.
